Drake Hogestyn, the actor who played the iconic character John Black on Days of Our Lives for nearly four decades, has sadly passed away after a battle with pancreatic cancer. The beloved actor, who helped shape one of the most famous couples in daytime TV history, died surrounded by his family.
A Legacy That Spanned 38 Years
Hogestyn first made his debut on Days of Our Lives on January 24, 1986, where he portrayed John Black, a character shrouded in mystery but defined by his heroic actions as a spy, mercenary, police officer, private investigator, and secret agent. Over his 38 years on the show, he appeared in more than 4,200 episodes, becoming one of the most beloved faces on NBC’s long-running soap opera.
In a statement shared on the show’s Instagram account, Hogestyn’s family wrote:
“He was thrown the curveball of his life when diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, but faced the challenge with incredible strength and determination. After an unbelievable fight, he passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. He was an amazing husband, father, and actor. He loved performing for the Days audience and sharing the stage with the greatest cast and crew.”

One of Hogestyn’s most enduring legacies is the on-screen romance between his character, John Black, and Marlena Evans, played by Deidre Hall.
