A Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) flight from Oslo, Norway to Malaga, Spain was forced to make an emergency landing after an unexpected and rather unusual event—a live mouse leapt out of a passenger’s in-flight meal. The flight was diverted to Copenhagen Airport as part of established safety procedures.
The Shocking Incident
The incident unfolded when a passenger opened their meal and a live mouse jumped out, much to the shock of the passengers around them. Jarle Borrestad, a fellow passenger, shared the bizarre experience on Facebook, writing, “Believe it or not, a lady next to me opened the food and out jumped a mouse.” The post, accompanied by laughing emojis, quickly caught attention as Borrestad also shared a picture of himself smiling alongside two fellow passengers.
The flight was immediately diverted to Copenhagen, where passengers were transferred to a different aircraft to continue their journey to Malaga.
Airline Response and Safety Procedures
Scandinavian Airlines took the situation seriously and followed their standard safety protocols. An airline spokesperson, Oystein Schmidt, stated, “This is something that happens extremely rarely. We have established procedures for such situations, including a thorough review with our suppliers to ensure this does not happen again.”
Rodents on flights are a significant safety concern, as they can pose a threat by chewing through electrical wiring, potentially causing malfunctions. As a precaution, airlines are vigilant about ensuring their flights are rodent-free.
Delta Emergency Landing
This wasn’t the only recent emergency landing incident. Just a few days prior, a Delta Air Lines flight from Salt Lake City to Portland, Oregon had to make an emergency landing after a sudden loss of cabin pressure. Several passengers experienced bleeding eardrums, headaches, and bloody noses. Paramedics were on-site when the plane landed to assist the affected passengers. Delta Air Lines issued an apology following the incident.
While the idea of a mouse in an in-flight meal may seem shocking, it is a rare occurrence, and Scandinavian Airlines handled the situation swiftly. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining strict safety procedures, even for the most unexpected scenarios.
Passengers were able to continue their journey, and SAS is taking steps to ensure such an event does not happen again.
