In a thrilling contest at the Dome, Stanford narrowly edged Syracuse 26-24 with a game-winning 39-yard field goal as time expired. The game featured dramatic lead changes and key plays, but it was Stanford’s last-minute drive that sealed the victory.

Stanford’s Strong Start

Stanford took control early, scoring the first 10 points of the game. A 17-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ashton Daniels to Elic Ayomanor gave Stanford the lead, followed by a field goal to increase the advantage. Syracuse struggled to get into rhythm early but managed to put points on the board late in the second quarter after an interception by Devin Grant set up a short field goal from Brady Denaburg.

Before the half, Syracuse came to life with a 67-yard touchdown catch and run by Umari Hatcher, closing the gap to 13-10 at halftime. Despite the spark, the Orange offense was held to just 145 total yards in the first half, with quarterback Kyle McCord being sacked four times.

Second Half Drama: Stanford's Defense Shines

Stanford continued to apply pressure in the third quarter, extending their lead to 20-10 after Mitch Leigber intercepted a pass and returned it 71 yards for a touchdown. The defensive touchdown provided a crucial cushion for Stanford as Syracuse began mounting a comeback.

Kyle McCord responded with a 19-yard scramble for a touchdown, cutting Stanford’s lead to 20-17. In a tense fourth quarter, McCord connected with Jackson Meeks on a 13-yard touchdown pass, giving Syracuse their first lead of the game, 24-23, with just minutes remaining.

Stanford’s Clutch Finish

Stanford wasn’t finished. With under a minute to play, they faced a crucial 4th-and-9 and converted, setting up a game-winning drive. As the clock ticked down, Stanford’s offense moved into field goal range, and their kicker nailed a 39-yard attempt as time expired, securing the 26-24 victory.

"It was a tough loss," said Syracuse head coach, acknowledging the team’s late effort but emphasizing the need to finish strong in critical moments.

Looking Ahead for Syracuse

With this loss, Syracuse drops to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in ACC play. They’ll look to bounce back next Saturday when they host Holy Cross. Syracuse will need to address their offensive line issues and find ways to protect McCord, who was under constant pressure throughout the game.

Stanford’s 26-24 win over Syracuse was a nail-biter, with both teams showcasing resilience and determination. While Syracuse mounted an impressive second-half comeback, Stanford's final drive and clutch field goal sealed the game. As the season progresses, both teams will look to build on this high-stakes matchup.
