Federer beats Tipsarevic at Basel ATP 2010

World no. 2 Roger Federer advanced to the quarter-final at the Basel ATP 2010 with a clinical 6-3 6-4 win over Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic. He’ll next face Radek Stepanek who beat Thiemo De Bakker 6-3 7-6(5) in an earlier match.

In typical Federer fashion, the first set lasted less than half-an-hour as one break of serve was enough for the Swiss to wrap up the opening set in 28 minutes. The second set lasted only marginally longer as Tipsarevic had no answer to his opponent’s all-round superior game in front of a packed stadium.

Meanwhile, Andy Roddick kept alive his chances of qualifying for the World Tour Finals at London with a straight sets 7-5 7-6(6) win over fellow American Sam Querrey.

Elsewhere, in a major upset at the Valencia ATP, defending champion Andy Murray was knocked out by Juan Monaco. The British number 1 seemed completely out of sorts against the Argentine who prevailed 6-2 3-6 6-2 in a match that lasted over 2 hours.
